Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour

Hi

I called a helicopter tour company and yes, they do land on the canyon floor for lunch. You might know that the GC is 277 miles long and not all are inside the GCNP. Your lunch spot is West Rim area, outside of GCNP.

Thanks Vegasmike.

Can i just ask what GCNP is? To be able to say that i was on the Canyon floor would be amazing!

Grand Canyon National Park

I've taken this tour--and it is great even though you don't get to the main part of the Grand Canyon. The pilots fly close to the ground just before you get to the canyon (like 30 feet above the ground) and then all of a sudden, it is about a half-mile drop straight down (like the ground just disappears).

Try to get a helicopter so that you arrive back in Las Vegas when the sun has already set. I convinced our pilot (for a small additional fee) to take my date and I (and the other couple in the helicopter) to the far (north) end of the Las Vegas "strip" and then fly over all the tall, giant resorts until we arrived back at the airport (at the south end). Seeing the gigantic city all lit up was a special trip all in itself.

Gary,
I have been in Vegas my entire life and have not taken the helicopter tour you did. It sounds like it was money well spent seeing the Strip from the air.

The Grand Canyon was so much nicer before aircraft was introduced there. This is one of the few natural features left in the Southwest - why do we have to make it into another theme park? This is one of the reasons I refuse to return to Grand Canyon NP. If you want to help the environment and experience the real natural elements of the park, please take the mule ride instead of the helicopter tour.

Daawgon, as I pointed out--the helicopter ride I took didn't go all the way to the main part of the Grand Canyon--just to the Indian reservation on the far western outskirts (which at the time I was there--over 20 years ago, wasn't accessible by road).

There are planes and helicopters that fly over the canyon proper--but I refuse to support them. Like you, I believe that they are very obtrusive and ruin the experience for those who are on the ground. I'd rather take either a mule ride or a white water rafting ride through the canyon. These are the ways to experience the canyon the way it was meant to be experienced. P.S. The white-water rafting expeditions are seriously "policed" to make sure they remove all items taken in and don't allow their customers (visitors) to deface or damage any of the natural features.
