28 day road trip advice!

My best friend and I are planning a 28 day road trip this summer. Just starting a thread to see if anyone has any great advice about how to survive on the road! We are primarily tenting the entire way, tips on good food items to stay stocked up on? In my eyes right now, our biggest obstacle is traveling the coast of California in 3 days, does anyone have any ideas on what we absolutely MUST see and what are some things worth skipping to get to the next stop. We plan to stay in LA, Big Sur National Park, San Francisco and Redwood National Park. This is our first big road trip so anything worth mentioning would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks Travel Community!!

My advice is that since you are tenting, you can go where you want, when you want. Don't stick to any schedule and each place you want to see takes as long as it takes. Rushing about can ruin a restful holiday

It's America. Anything you might need you can buy on the way. Are you going to take the old Route 66 to LA? Do make sure you have plenty of water with you as it gets quite hot in the desert areas.

One thing that might be a good idea is getting a park pass if visiting more than one national park. That said, there is no National Park in Big Sur. but there are some beautiful state parks -LimeKiln SP, Julia Pfieffer SP, and Pfieffer Big Sur SP, all within about 50 miles of each other and all in redwood forests, but may sell out fast. Just up the road is Andrew Molera State Park- a walk-in campground but excellent coastal hiking and great beach access. Perfect for day visits. Also, there's a hike in hot springs in Ventana National Forest in Big Sur. I'd say pick one of the parks in the redwoods, visit Molera park, and maybe hike in to the springs. North of SF, just amble along and you'll find great camping and towns along the way to Redwoods NP. Mendocino is nice. Are you only going along the coast? There's Lassen Volcanic Nat'l Park and Shasta Trinity Nat'l Forest in Northern California- both with great camping. And of course it would be a shame to miss Yosemite Nat'l Park. Crowded in the summer, but still majestic. You could take a month or months taking in all the scenery, but here's some ideas.
