In my opinion the best experience in honduras is ROATAN.
Cool - any particular beaches/ dive schools/ lodges you recommend?
Copan Ruinas are lovely, but they are far from Bay Islands, they are sitting in the border with Guatemala. Be patient- it will be loooooonnnggg road with many connections (if u plan going with chicken-buses).
For real adventure check up Mosquito region. It has to be guided. Jungle is not joke.
La Ceiba - costal city where from ur taking ferry to islands, quite special place itself + many interesting things to do and to see around - cacao plantations, various hiking, animals-watching, mangro-forest, etc etc.
Bay Islands:
From 3 big Islands - Roatan is the most developed, has an airport, more tourist-oriented then others. Utila - a bit cheaper, cooler, younger. Both islands are connected to the land with ferry, but not connected between them - at least they were not connected a while ago, it may be changed - check it up. The third island is not for tourists, but for wealthy landlords who wants their privacy. That's a reason why arriving there is complicated, and all the rest of activities is relatively limited. Both, Roatan and Utila are fulfilled with dive schools. Prices are same or very similar, everybody smiles, everybody speaks English (Caribbean, its mothertongue for them). Level of these schools are pretty same - I have never heared that someone was not satisfied. Also dive sites are pretty same, in any case 90% of dives are from the boat, almost no costal dives. So its not really matter. I would reccomend u not book anything for advance - just come into and talk with ppl there. They all were very friendly and nice, you will choose alone. No worries. Just care to b in good health (no running nose). Except of big islands - there are "cays"- petite islands sometimes inhabbited, sometimes with couple of houses there.
I had very good expirience with ppl of Honduras. I found them very hearty, helpful, sincere.
What else is very special there: cilture ( incl. music, food and alcohol) of Garifuna ppl.
Avoid Tegusigalpa (the capital) - its awful.
