Solo Travels Aug to Nov in Oz/NZ

Hi Everyone,
I'm planning a trip to Australia in mid August. I'm thinking of flying into Sydney and then flying up to Cairns and doing the Great Barrier Reef and the Gold Coast and then hiring a camper and driving back down the coast to Sydney, making plenty of stops along the way.
I'd love to chat to anyone else thinking of doing a similar trip to share ideas etc.
After that I plan on visiting friends in Melbourne and Perth before going over to NZ in October.
Any advice and tips are very welcome!
Thanks, Laura

One way vehicle hire can be very expensive in that they will have to pay someone to drive the camper back to Cairns, and then their transport back to Sydney. While a camper can save you money on accommodation (you can still pay to use a trailer park, with water and electricity), they do tend to get not many miles per gallon, so you lose out there.

Advice. I would have said fly into Perth. It's a LONG way across Australia and you do not want to pay for it twice. Then from Perth, fly to Cairns and make your way down through Sydney to Melbourne and then fly from there to NZ.

There are times when cars are not easy to hire in NZ, so maybe book early. Book all flights early to keep prices down.

Hi Cyberia,

Thanks for your tips! Flying in to Perth and up to Cairns from there definately makes sense so I'll look into that.

I'll also look at hostels etc as well as camper vans. I've used campers in Europe and like the freedom it allows for taking detours etc but if it turns out to be too expensive then I'm happy using public transport instead.

Thanks for your help!

hi laura

im going travelling in july haven't booked anything yet will be going to aus great barrier reef and the gold coast. im also travelling alone and would like to meet a travel buddy. is august the earliest you can go.

Hi Summer80,

I may be able to leave a little earlier, it all depends on cash to be honest. I'm waiting for me new passport to arrive before I can apply for my visa and then I'll be booking flights when that comes through.
What date are you hoping to go and how long for?

Laura

hi laura

im thinking of leaving begining of july i have to be back for november so just want to make the most of my time. i don't really mind where i go as long as i can scuba dive. i am going to apply for my visa this week then think about booking flights might even stop at thialand for a few weeks. very scary would like to find a travel buddy for a few weeks.

Hi,

I've sent you a PM with my facebook link so we can add each other and chat on there, might be easier.

I agree it all is very scary, I'm also really excited about the whole thing too. I'm told the greatest rewards come from doing things that are out of your normal comfort zone so I hope this is true!

I'm going to try and book flights for asap, as soon as my new passport and visa application go through. My original plan was to work here for a few months and save up some cash, but I'm rethinking that now and considering working in either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane/Gold Coast for a few months before travelling around.

Have you looked into where the best places are to do scuba diving? I've done scuba before and I'd be keen to do some dives too.

Laura
