I've heard a lot of great things about the Revolutionary Era Walking Tour where you tour many historic sites from our nation's beginnings. http://www.nyctourist.com/nyctravel/4th-of-july There is also a "Mini Declaration Signing" where kids can participate in the history and how the declaration came about. Of course there will be parades and other events going on around town!
I have heard the cruises are amazing, but I know they are between $125-$165 per a person which might be a lot if you are on a budget. There are many places across the river where you would be able to see the fireworks as well.
