My wife and I are heading to Europe in the fall and we haven't decided on a place as of yet. Looking to stay in one city, as much fun as it might be to travel from city to city we'd like to invest in one place and then maybe go back another time in the not to distant future. Any advice or suggestions as to what city to visit and why would be greatly appreciated. Also my wife and I only speak english so there's that to think about as well I'm not sure if that would eliminate some cities or not.
What's the best city - really depends on your likes and dislikes - really no one answer. Also, how rich are you?
If you like things super clean and orderly, one of the Scandinavian capitals might be good - Copenhagen is not real hard to take.
If you like art and good food, I suggest Rome.
If you like theatre, London might be good - priciest city I believe.
Paris has romance, art, good food and good shopping.
Amsterdam is good for people who like things funky (but the food is nothing special in my opinion).
Other possibilities include Barcelona and Istanbul. I think you need to make a trip to your public library or bookstore! Most everyone in the major cities of Europe knows English - not a problem unless you wander off to the boonies. I personally avoid Germany because it reminds me so much of home, but the beer and wurst are sensational! Switzerland if you can afford it - it really does look like the postcards.

Tough question. There are so many places in Europe and they are so very different. In other words, it really depends on your budget and interests. I would really recommend going to at least two different places, if you can, to get a bit more of a sense of what 'Europe' is like - perhaps one expensive place ( is definitely worth it if it's your first time over the pond) and one cheaper one ( - surprisingly is not expensive at all - or perhaps somewhere nice and warm in Spain, Greece (extremely cheap at the moment due to the economic crisis there - is worth visiting), or indeed in Croatia - a real gem of a town in southern Europe. To save money and to get a more 'insider' feel of a town, I suggest going for self-catering accommodation in the town centers rather than checking into a hotel.
Now that I think of it, London has the Olympics this year. That might either be a further reason to come (there will be a lot going on besides the olympics - extra shows, festivals, events, etc.) or not (if you want to avoid crowds). If you want to come to the UK but want to avoid the excesses of London this summer, is another very atmospheric town to visit. Tough decisions. Good luck.

Personally one of my favorite cities in Europe (if not my favorite) is Barcelona. The city has so much to offer: you have the park Guel with many of Gaudis Artwork and a stunning view of the city, the beach directly next to the city, Mount Jujic with all its activities, tasty seafood and other spanish delicacies, a great nightlife, and many more things...
Not everyone will speak English there, but personally I think you can get around using English everywhere.
You can go to ! At first I thought this would be a boring place but it is truly one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Wow lot of great advice. I think price of the trip depends on it's worth. Some places are extremely expensive but they're also incredible places so it can be worth doing that over going to a half way decent place for a lower price. In my opinion vacations are what you make them mixed with a little bit of you get out of it what you pay into it. Paris sounds amazing and so does Rome. I've heard the same things about London being over priced as well. Thanks for the tips!

The spots i've read in the other comments are problably very crowded...
If you try Portugal, Lisbon will be a little crowded too... but here you have a peace of everything much cheaper. If you want to do some research, Sintra is beatiful... very turistic place but it has several palaces and a castle that should be seen. The list would be long if you are interested in this kind of monument. In Lisbon you have a great couche museum. If you like golf.... many resorts to choose. If you like Nature... Portugal has mountains, beaches, sea, rivers... but the best of all Açores islands... that' nature!! Not going so far... try Berlenga Island. You can be in Lisbon and go there in one day.
If you would like Alchoolic drinks... you can go and try Vinho do Porto (if you go you must visit Porto and The Douro vineyards) or a lot of good wines. More difficult is to try the Brandy (Portugal has one of the 3 demarcated brandy areas in Europe: Cognac, Armagnac and Aguardente da Lourinhã). You have to make a reservation for it.
If you prefer just sun and relax Algarve is the best... a little crowded. You aldo have Madeira Island...
If you want to do everything... see Lisbon, the countryside, untoutched nature and taste our brandy... you can do that staying in Lisbon or the Medieval town of Óbidos, or in the fishermen village of Peniche. By the way in óbidos you have ginginha.
Most of all people go to Portugal because of the food and the people.
