Hi all
Which guide book have you bought?
Cheers,
Terry
I would avoid Vietnam from late Jan through most of Feb because of TET - high prices and transport that's very difficult. Maybe the rest of Indochina would be better - I especially like Laos.
(Vietnam before Thailand would be the very best)
Gavin,
Johnny gave good advice on VN. I was in HaNoi during Tet one year and it is a tough time to be there. Basically most VN people home to be with family. That means all transport will be packed out a few days before Tet and packed again when it ends. During Tet most of the sightseeing attractions are closed. Many restaurants close as they do not have enough staff. Tet falls on Feb. 9-14 2013. I would try to be in VN before or after Tet.
I think the bus you are thinking about is the bus in VN. It allows you to travel between HCMC & HaNoi or the reverse, hitting cities on the list. Stay a day or a week, get on/off when you choose. Very convenient for travellers. I don't think there is such a system between SEA countries.
Good luck with your planning.

No Mike he is talking about STA the English travel company that is now offering buses in Thailand and Laos with Stray bus.
Gavin, don't waste your money on these kind of over priced buses. Travel in SEA is pretty easy and part of the adventure. The open tour bus that Mike talks about is one of many available in Vietnam. In my opinion it's better to have a rough outline of main areas to visit, then just get settled in your first town of arrival and check out the scene, you'll always meet up with other travelers, and then figure out your route and transport. Every street corner has at least one travel company that can book your bus. After you have talked to other travelers there, you will get feel for what to do and what not.
As far as having enough time. If you had about 20 years you probably still wouldn't have enough time! The answer is, take as much time as you can take and then make the most of it.
