I have the chance of taking a week in a time share in either Paraty or Angra dos Reis and making it my base of operations for touring the area. The property in Paraty is nice but it is a walk to the beach and from what I hear the best beaches are outside of town. But I heard the town is fabulous and offers lots to do and see.
paraty is lovely. nice little town, relaxed if you want it, and late nights if you dont.
angra dos reis is not the nicest place you'll visit, but if you have the money to stay in a resort then maybe spend it going to ilha grande instead. if you're short on cash expect to do a lot of walking though on big island... hiring private boats is expensive. if youre prepared to get up early you can walk a long way and reach some of the nicer, emptier beaches. just remember a torch for coming back. some of those trails get steep and slippy.
(if you're not sure what they are, the first time you hear howler monkeys is utterly terrifying in the darkness)
Thanks so much for responding. When you get the chance I'd also like to know if there are any particular safety issues in both Parati and on Ilha Grande (especially if well be walking through the jungle). I love taking pictures and carry my camera nearly everywhere. Other than using common sense do I have anything to be afraid of?
other than common sense no, not that i can think of. obviously don't keep your Canon 1DS with 85mm 1.2 out on display. put it in a bag... a rucksuck, not a bag saying canon on it.
the bus station at parati can be a little hectic, but no more so that most places.
if you're trecking through ilha grande remember to pack your camera in something vaguely waterproof. when it rains, it really rains, and there ain't nowhere to find cover when you're 3 hours out on a trail.
I really appreciate your taking the time to reply. Your advice has set my mind at ease
