road trip USA tips for LGBT couple? places to go/avoid?

Hi guys! New to this site...my girlfriend and I are going on a month long road trip around the USA. Were kind of hitting everything...down south, up the west coast, and back towards the northeast. I wanted to see if anybody had any advice for areas/places/cities/towns to potentially avoid for a traveling gay couple (places that are not very LGBT-friendly or even potentially dangerous). I am a pretty self aware/street smart person, but given that we are visiting a LOT of new places and areas neither of us is familiar with, I want to make sure we stay safe and aware of where we are at all times. Also, any tips for particularly gay friendly areas are welcomed! (Besides the "well knowns" like san fran, portland, DC, etc).

Most major cities, especially in the north east, are gay friendly. Virginia is a very conservative state but still has gay friendly areas. Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, Washington DC, Boston are all very safe for gay tourists. Of course if your in the Boston area a trip out to Cape Cod and a stop over in Provincetown is a must. Provincetown is a major American gay tourist destination where its safe to walk and go anywhere holding hands, embracing whatever.

Best to avoid the Bible Belt (Texas north to Iowa) and the Mountain West (Utah, Wyoming, Montana). You will find all of the West Coast gay friendly, and most of the East Coast as well.

Palm Springs is quite the gay mecca these days, and I'm sure you know about Key West.

I don't know the South too well (we don't really consider Florida to be "deep south" - it's more the "latin or senior south". You should try to fit in Hawaii - I love Honolulu - cheap flights on from
Bellingham, WA
Boise, ID
Eugene, OR
Fresno, CA
Las Vegas, NV
Monterey, CA
Phoenix/Mesa, AZ
Santa Maria, CA
Spokane, WA
Stockton, CA

Atlanta which is in the bible belt has a huge gay community, as does Dallas and Huston.

I would say that Key West shouldn't be missed on your tour and you may well never leave! Although these days its a lot more sanitized and certainly a lot more expensive. South beach in Miami is another hot spot.

Las Vegas just held 'Gay Days' at the Tropicana. Vegas has many clubs that cater to the LGBT community as well. Stop in Vegas if you have to chance and I am sure you will find it very welcoming.

Good luck on your coming trip to the US.

Thanks for all the responses!!

Do not forget New Orleans - especially around Mardi Gras time
