Hong Kong vs ShangHai

Hello there,

Difficult one. I visited both last November, and I must say that I was very impressed by Shanghai and liked it. It is huge and the most international city of mainland China (if you don't count Hongkong). It's also a bit cheaper to travel around, eat, sleept etc.
That said, Hongkong definately wins when it comes down on beautiful setting and the views from the Victoria Peak and Kowloon Harbor are just fantastic (especially at night).
Both cities can be combined with other places, for example Shanghai with Suzhou and Hongkong with Macau.
Tough choice, but I would say Hongkong is number one.

I have never been to HK but I have been to Shanghai. I have to say that everyone I know who has been to HK enjoys it, many times because of it's "western" quality. Of course Shanghai is also very modern and industrialized but still lacks the colonized aspect of HK. Do you really want to travel all the way to China and visit the most 'western' city in the country? I would say Shanghai is a lovely start and spend a few days there but if you can get to Beijing I would highly recommend it. Great mix of modern and traditional and the Great Wall is a must-see for any world traveler. Enjoy your trip to PRC.

I loved Hong Kong - it's an exciting, vibrant city, and there's loads to see and do. I am going to Shanghai in around 7 weeks time so will come back to this thread then!

I think the most important thing when you travel around is to know the people there and their culture. So I recommend you to go you some website such as -snip- to get more information about the city you want to travel. But Hongkong or Shanghai? It is very difficult to answer for they charactize with modern and wealth. But I must say, the people in shanghai is more traditional.

i really like to travel. Shanghai and Beijing is got a lot history (a bit boring for those dont like history, but at the night is very syiok coz can shopping at night market there)and Hong Kong is shopping heaven .

HK vs. Shanghai

I guess I have stayed in China for too long. By the time I reached Shanghai, I thought it was just another Chinese city with a good economy.

HK is more beautiful. But SHANGHAI is part of the mainland. It sounds more prestigious. HK is way to classic and cliche, compared to Shanghai. But it depends on what you wanted to do.

I just wanted to party and I though the club scene in Shanghai is over rated.

I don't know, but I wasnt that impressed. After the bund, everything else felt like Shenzhen, Guilin and Guanzhou.

But I'm sure anyone who is only there for a week will love it.

HK harbor vs. the Bund... I though HK looked more impressive.

hi, I am from Shanghai and I've been to HK and Beijing for a few times. If you really want to visit one city, I suggest Shanghai. Not just because of I am from Shanghai. In my view HK is a place to shopping. In Beijing you can feel the China's traditional things, such as Beijing Opera, the Imperial Palace... Shanghai is a multi-cultural metrpolois with both modern and tranditional Chinese features. Shanghai is a "Haipai" style city, which has western and eastern features.

I've only been to HK so I shouldn't really be answering, but I really love HK. It is not all about shopping, I haven't done any shopping the 3 times I have been there. It is westernised, but I can guarantee you wont find a western city that looks like HK!! It is incredibly beautiful and like no other city in the world (well, at least no other city that I have ever seen). there are also lots of little islands that you can do day trips to so that you can also see the "traditional" China as well.
Just one other point that I always get confused about. If you have been to HK do you say you have been to China or not? When people ask me I always say "yes I have been to China, well...Hong Kong". And they always reply with "so not really China then". Nothing to do with his thread, but just a point I thought I would mention!! hehe
