Me and my friend shall be travelling around the east coast for 3 months in february and i have a full UK driving license and i know i can legally drive in oz. Would it be cheaper to just rent a car/campervan for 3 months or use some kind of hop on and hop off bus service, if there is one? Just one more question too, what kinda clothes do i need?
Thanks for your help guys!
I personally like the independence of four wheels. You can live out of a car/campervan. Stop anytime. Sleep anywhere. Stay longer. Move sooner. No booking ahead, so no having to make a destination. Your call really.
It all depends on your budget I guess. Weigh up what it will cost for a 3 month hop on hop off bus ticket and 90 days accomodation (be it camp site or hostel) against the cost of buying a camper (which you can probably sell at the end of your trip for about the same price), fuel cost and insurance.
I'm thinking about using hostels when I go in Jan, and just hitch hiking my way down the east coast (I'm there for a year or so, so hopefully might get picked up once or twice in that time frame hahaha)
Good luck with whatever you decide to do, if it's a camper, long may she run smoothly!
How much would buying a campervan and insurance cost? Would it be cheaper to rent one or buy one? How much would a bus ticket cost do you reckon? This is my first ever travelling abroad around a country
Not sure mate, my first trip too. What I suggest you do tho is look on some australian ad websites where locals sell their cars and see how much they cost.
And look at some australian insurance websites and see how much car insurance costs.
And the same with how much renting a camper or getting a bus ticket would cost. I would say you have to learn to do your own research. I could tell you right now that you could get a years hop on hop off bus pass for $100 and you might believe me - but I don't have a bloody clue tbh.
Do your own research is the best tip I could give you, it may take a bit of effort, but at least you will have your facts and figures first hand as opposed to 3rd, 7th or 29th hand. The internet is a great research tool, spend a bit of time using it. Also, get yourself a lonely planet guide to Oz or something.
I'm going for 3 months next year. After doing some research I realised it would be much cheaper to buy my own van - compared to bus/hostels. If you're staying 90 days in hostels, at AU$30 a night, then that's AU$2700. Transport will be on top of that. You can get a decent campervan for less than AU$4000 - I've seen a few as low as $2000.
I believe 3rd party insurance is included in the vehicle registration (Rego), so you don't need that. One thing to consider is camp sites. You can't just park anywhere. Some camp sites are expensive, some cheap (e.g. AU$5 a night), and some free. There are a few books listing the cheap/free sites (can't remember what they're called right now).
For me it's all about the freedom of being able to go where I like and on my own terms. Plus, as a previous poster said, you can sell it at the end of your trip and get back most of, if not all, your money. That's the idea anyway, hehe.
I've found Gumtree good for looking at vans for sale in Oz. It'll give you an idea of price, etc.
If you're buying a NSW registered Van then 3rd party personal injury insurance is included (greenslip), but any additional insurance such as 3rd party property costs extra. In my opinion you wouldn't want to be without 3rd party property insurance, imagine running into a porsche then having to pay for the repairs
Me and my friend will both have AUS$3,000 each. So paying anything more than $2,000 for the van just cant be done as we have to think of fuel/gas/petrol cost too. If campsites charge wont they charge the same as what hostels do if not more?
Or just buy a tent and pitch up at certain places? That must be free!
A book I've used to find free/cheap camp sites is Camps Australia Wide, I think they're up to volume 5. If you stay in caravan parks then you'll be up for about $25 a site, National Parks tend to be a bit cheaper ~$7 each person.
You could try to buy a tent and a station wagon like a ford falcon and drive that, you should be able to pick one up fairly cheap.
