Hey guys, was just wondering what you thought of the above. The hostel where I'm planning on staying had to cancel my booking, so they offered me a better deal.

Where in the world is this hostel located? In Australia/New Zealand it's common to be asked for creditcard number and expiry date to confirm a booking when calling on the phone (they'll charge the first night if you don't show up), but I've never come across any hostel asking for the CVC.

Hey, thanks for the information guys. The hostel is in Ireland, and I'm a bit suspect right now. It would be weird to ask for my CVC number. I'll keep your comments in mind, and will contact the hostel again.

If you are booking online, through any of the hostel booking agencies (same goes for a bunch of the hotel booking systems too), the hostels get access to all this information as well. Although I'm not 100% sure if the CVC is also passed on, hostels can charge customers for no-shows for example, so I think they have access to the CVC as well.
What I would never do is email it to them, but even that only goes so far. There's always a human element involved in how these properties take care of details that are provided to them by others, no matter what their contracts etc. say.
I'd have no problem giving them the info they require.
Sure I've been ripped off in the past, but got my money back once the bank were informed as to what went on. C.C. details are the way forward to doing business nowadys.
Nowadays, most companies ask for the CVC number when you pay for something online. It's to prove you actually possess the card and didn't just steal the number from a database.
