Okay guys.. I'm going for a year to the following places: North America, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia... given the times of year in each of the countries I should have a pleasant enough climate in all areas.

Then pack enough clothes to last you 10 days without doing laundry. It is all you really need. When the stuff gets dirty wash. Two pants and 2-3 shirts aside from the one you are wearing is usually enough. Shoes: Good hiking sandals. Combine them with thick socks when it gets cool and wear them without any socks when it rains. Alternatively bring hiking sneakers and flip-flops. One light rain- and windproof jacket.
Additional useful gadgets:
-small (!!!!) towel
-small plastic containers for soap, shampoo, etc that cannot leak
-silverware
-small plastic container (for fruit and other food that doesn't like getting squeezed)
-small flashlight
-moneybelt, passport, tickets, copies of all important documents, etc
-duct tape (can be a life-saver when the zip of your bag breaks)
-sewing kit
-scissors/swiss army knife
less is more, don't bother with a sleeping bag.
Yeah ditch the sleeping bag. You only need to bring about 4 days of clothes. One pair of pants and if you really need to two bathing suits. I would bring a light long sleeve layer and a rain jacket and you set.. Everything should easily fit in a carryon size luggage.. What you cant take on the plane, buy in your destination.

Good advice, t_maia, but I still think you need less. I would take 2 convertible pants which can be used as shorts, and every hotel has soap/shampoo already. In Vietnam the hotel even supplies a toothbrush and comb! Silverware?????
Thank you very much for all of your comments guys!! All noted.. x
