There are a number of diving companies in Malaysia. Some examples:

Not cheap though. If you go to a coastal resort, in some places you'll see shops which do do it cheaply.

Not really that much to see in Malaysia. Penang, the Highlands, Kuala Lumpur, etc.

Lots of cheap accommodation about online from companies like asiarooms.

Singapore is expensive to stay in. It always has been. It's a matter of going through the "budget" accommodation there and seeing which is least bad for the price. Try to get somewhere near the subway which makes getting around easy. A fair bit to see in Singapore:

there are several great diving options in malaysia, depending on your budget.

if you have cash to spare, aim for pulau sipadan in sabah (east Malaysia) - http://www.tourism.gov.my/en/destinations/item.asp?item=sipadan.

if you're on a budget, pulau perhentian is your best bet (you don't even have to dive to swim with sharks and turtles actually - snorkelling would do!) - http://www.tourism.gov.my/en/destinations/item.asp?item=perhentian

you can cover quite a lot in 10 days. but you'd have to decide what you want to prioritise on. e.g. if it's islands and diving, then head to the east coast, spend 4-5 days there soaking up the sun and the sea and the horizon. then travel to singapore, maybe stopping en route in malacca for the antiques' market and amazing nyonya food (budget accommodation is plenty). spend a night there (weekend better for the market), and then head towards singapore for a total city experience - shopping, museums, maybe a concert or two. i'd say 3 days is enough for singapore, it costs a lot - but i guess it depends what you're after.

hope this helps!

Hi

There are quite a few places that you could go diving and achieve your PADI whilst you are in Malaysia.

Due to the amount of travel days that you have for your time in Malaysia and Singapore and the fact that your PADI will take 4 days normally to complete and no doubt you will want to do some diving yourself once you have passed, it might be best to spend some time on an island close to Singapore.

My suggestions might be either Tioman Island on the east coast of Malaysia or Pulau Pangkor on the west coast of Malaysia. From Kuala Lumpur you can take a bus to the coastal town of Lumut from where boats travel over to Pulau Pangkor. I would advise you to spend a few days in Kuala Lumpur maybe at the start of your trip for a bot of sight-seeing and sampling some of the tasty food around China Town before you start your diving. You can then take the bus back to Kuala Lumpur after Pulau Pangkor and then hop on a train or bus down from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.

To get to Tioman Island it might be best to get a cheap Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Tioman as it is not very accessible by road or rail. After a few days on the island you can then take a flight from Tioman Island to Singapore to spend your last few days there maybe???

Hope this helps you with your plans.

Singapore is really busy and interesting in September. Besides the F1 race that is happening, there is also the mid autumn festival, the best place to visit may be the Esplanade because that's where there are many free outdoor performances. The festive street bazaar and eating moon cakes. -snip-

You can also go to Geylang Serai.. there is a big bazaar going on during this month of Ramadan. :-)
