Recommendations for Cambodia

Hiya,

Just my recommendations:
Cambodia: Phnom Penh & Siam Reap for Angkor complex.
Vietnam: Hanoi for Halong Bay, Ho Chi Minh City and there are many interesting cities in between.

You can go overland by bus.

Enjoy!

Hey Dan ...

Must stop off at Pheon Phen, Siem Riep ~ WHile there is Angkor Wat. Absolutley stunning. Shinokville is as a good place to relax. In Vietnam ~ Saigon, visit the Chu chi tunnels and Mekong. Then go to Nha Trang (very touristy, but good party town), Hoi An, get some clothes made here and finally Hanoi.

Enjoy the trip!!

Hi Dan,

For your time in Cambodia your main point of interest has to be Siem Reap. I would suggest you take a two day temple tour of Angkor Wat and surrounding temples so that you don’t get too templed out on your first day. A must do is obviously Angkor Wat, I would also advise to go to Angkor Thom, Bayon and Ta Prohm. This is the temple is covered by the jungle and has been used for films such as Tomb Raider. I would also advise if you have time to go to Banteay Srei, it is quite far away from the main temple complex but is definitely worth a visit.

Also during your time in Cambodia I would suggest a trip to Kratie to see the Irrawaddy Dolphins. On the banks on the Mekong this small town is the best place to go to see these endangered Dolphins which only live around the Mekong Delta.

For your time in Vietnam the following places are a must for most travelers; Hanoi and Halong Bay, from here I would suggest that you take a boat trip on a traditional Chinese junk boat around the islands in the bay. Travel then onto Hoi An, a beautiful artistic town where you can get whatever clothes you want made up for you. Travel down to Nha Trang or Palm Island if you want to do some diving or snorkeling whilst in Vietnam and then onto Saigon and take a trip to the Chu Chi Tunnels.

Hope this helps.

Further to the above suggestions, whilst you are in Phnom Penh it's worth taking a trip out to the Killing Fields and also to the Tuol Sleng genocide museum. You will need to hire a tuk-tuk to take you out to the Killing Fields and when you get there I'd recommend hiring a guide for a couple of dollars.

The Royal Palace in PP is also worth a visit.

I suggest you use the Capitol GH for your trip out to the Killing Fields. I have been out there on a moto and in an a/c van. Same price, $3. I vote air con van rather than a moto or tuk tuk.

Apart from the places already listed, I recommend the Kampot/Kep area in Southern Cambodia. It's an absolutely beautiful and chilled out area. It's also right next to the Cam/Viet border so maybe a handy stop.

As for Kratie, as mentioned above, it's a nice place but there's not tons to do apart from seeing the dolphins (which are actually 30km north of Kratie I think). It's a little out of the way also (better if you were heading to Laos).
