So originally my plans were to get to Sydney in January, mooch about for 2 or 3 months with my friends, while we waited for another friend to get there in about March.
December/January isn't the best time to be up in Cairns as it tends to be "the wet season" which is hot and humid with the possibility of flooding and cyclones. This being the case, often it's not as busy up there, although I'm not sure if all tour operators are open in this season.
Well my friend is coming out for 1 month, we will be in Sydney anyway.
What can we do for a month? I'd rather not stay in Sydney the whole time.
Still head north I think, Byron Bay and Fraser Island are both awesome destinations. If possible try to leave have far you get open, you might get all the way to Cairns if the weather is good for it or you might get distracted at the Whitsundays and spend a week sailing.
Unfortunately the guy coming out to meet us will need a return flight within the month, so I think we need to know that we can make it the whole way.
Thanks for the info though, I am currently looking at Self Drive Fraser Island tours, pondering whether to do 1 night or 2?
What would you recommend?
Two nights would be better, I'd recommend catching a ferry from Hervey Bay so that you're closer to the main attractions, the alternative is to catch a ferry from Inskip Point which is the far southern end of the island.
Visit the lakes day 1 and camp up near near Eli Creek night 1, visit Eli Creek, the Maheno, Indian head and if you have time visit Champaign pools as well - although you may not be allowed to drive north of Indian Head depending on your hire agreement. Camp 2nd night at Dundubara and on the 3rd day revisit what you enjoyed or if you missed any lakes have a look on your way back to the ferry.
For a one nighter on Fraser Island you'd have to cut out some of the lakes and camp at Dundubara, skip Champaign pools and head for the ferry night 1, it'd be rushed and you don't want to be too rushed driving on the beaches because there have been several roll over accidents over the past few years.
