waterproof/ tough cameras

hi all,

Dpreview did a a couple of months ago. All seven are in your budget (half of them barely), so I'd say it's worth reading through the entire article and picking whichever camera best suits your personal tastes. (The two joint winners were the Canon PowerShot D10 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1, with the Canon performing best underwater, but the Panasonic performing best in low light situations. Both cost $320, though, which pretty much exactly is £200. The Pentax Optio W60 was the runner up, and costs only at $240 (~£150), so might be a good option too.)

Not sure if you're still looking for a camera, I have the Panasonic DMC-FT1 (the Australian version of the DMC-TS1) and find it performs very poorly in low light conditions. It tends to set the ISO speed way too high and so the photos are grainy, you can limit it to ISO 400 and below and it's better but still not ideal. Well lit photos look good and it shoots very nice video so overall it's not a bad camera.

I "upgraded" from a Canon Ixus 50 thinking the Panasonic would blow it out of the water and was a bit disappointed with the picture quality so tend to take everyday photos with the Canon and use the Panasonic for wet or tough situations. All the reviews I read put the Panasonic either at the top or near the top, so maybe mine's just a bad one. I would have got the Canon but it looked a bit like a toy.

Send me a message to let me know what you got and how you find it, maybe I'll upgrade...
