Hey All,
I think you would have an easier time booking at least 2 rooms than a single room for 5 people. Unless for Bangkok you want a hostel with dorms. There are some dorms where you can all stay in one room. I wouldn't want to stay in a hotel room with 4 other people with one toilet and maybe 2 or 3 towels!
Is this a family group, 2 couples and a spare or something like the "Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice" movie? There may be some suites you can book but 5 is an odd number unless a couple of your group are small kids.
Maybe someone can come up with a place you can use but you should reference a price range. (Use a baht amount!)
Hey I am traveling sole to Bangkok and then to the south -- phuket.. for 2 weeks. Should i be booking my accomodations in advance??

What time of the year are you coming to Thailand? What time of day do you arrive at the airport? Are you healthy enough to walk while carrying bags looking for a room?
Late at night - arriving for the first time in Bangkok - without anyone meeting you - book at least the first night. This way you have a hotel for the taxi to head for.
Closer to Christmas means fewer vacancies. Vacancies can be tight in high season anyway.
Arriving during the day hours, off season, in good health, being able to lug your bags around - you should be able to get a room with a walk-in.
(Phuket is the most expensive city in Thailand for tourists.)
At least have a few suggestions for hotels you can visit. For hotel advice mention your price range. Very young travelers often head for the Khao San Road area. Other tourists may choose hotels in the Siam or Sukhumvit Road area so they can also use the overhead rail service called the Skytrain. No rail service after midnight. No rail service in the KSR area. It is possible to use rail service from the airport to some hotels in the city.
I agree with karazyal on this. Good luck!
