Hey there,
Gordon,
Chat with the Thai Embassy in the UK and decide what visa you will need to buy. Cambodia will sell you a 30 day visa when you arrive at their border. Thai Imm. will give you a free 15 day entry permit when you cross back into Tland after Cambodia. Or a free 30 day entry permit if you choose to fly back into BKK. I would fly BKK-PNH on and come back from Siem reap overland. Here is a for all things Cambodia.
I would head over to in BKK upon arrival. There are thousands of young backpackers doing just what you are: bumping around SEA spending as little as possible. You are certain to meet others that have 'been there, done that' before you. Chat with them about your plans and somebody will have already done it. They will have ideas on where to stay, how to get there, what to avoid. Stay 3-4 days in BKK and you should have some new friends to travel with. Just be flexible and where you are going and you will not be alone for long. Relax and enjoy your stay in SEA.
Good luck with your planning.
