hi all,
Time, money, passport and a map!
For more details you should mention your destination and your way of traveling.
PS: maybe some extra underwear...

As kmk8 says, also the senses
sense of humour.
sense of adventure.
common sense! (most important).
Safe travels
Everything that's necessary for a safe, comfortable trip is about 1/3rd of what most new travellers haul around.
In other words you can travel indefinitely through warm countries (staying in hostels/hotels, no camping) with a carry-on size 40 litre backpack with LOTS of room left over.
Have fun.
Cheers,
Terry

Try this.
I think what you need to go with is all mentioned, and the mostly important you need to go with is knowledge of knowing what you want to experience and what you want to get from it. I really say enjoy your journey.
Travelling light is defiantly a good tip! you may get bored of the same clothes but some hostels have clothes swaps for that problem also a camera is ESSENTIAL!! also a dairy/travel book to document all the sights you see and all the amazing people you will meet :D
And have fun and stay safe!
Agree with a camera, I love taking pictures to remember later on (but not too many or you might miss out on what's in front of you). Knowing your place beforehand is a great tip and even bringing books, maps, dictionary (depending where you are going and what you are doing) is helpful as well. I remember one suggestion to me for traveling, was to bring a few zip lock/ grocery bags. Whether to keep something dry, to keep your trash in or dirty laundry, or to organize things, that definitely was a great suggestion to me.
