You do have a flight option. Both & fly: BKK-CNX. Overnight buses, both gov't & private make the run to CM every day/night as well. I would book the train a few days in advance if you choose that option.
You might consider Pattaya's Songkran as well. They draw it out for a week. April 13-19th.
I've done it and taken the train. For some reason I didn't have a hard time getting reservations, but I can't swear it is always easy.
The trains do change but follow the advice above and try the trains. The Songkran Chang Mai is also long - enjoy...
