Peru to Brazil

Me and my friend and hopefully looking to go travelling for 7 weeks between June and August. My friend has some travelling experience from trips with his parents, but i am a first time traveler. We are both students so we are working on a very tight budget, £2,000. We have had a quick look and flights are around £900, which leaves us with £1,100 to survive on.

bump

I checked Kayak and a flight of £400.39 came up but the downside is you spend a lot of time waiting at some airport so it's a 20 hour flight. Buses are cheaper but take a good book with you.

Tip. Get a bus from Lima to to Santiago (about 30 hours). Have a look around, take a bus, one hour, to Valparaiso for a day. Have a ride on the funicular and subway system in Santiago. Then take a flight from there to Rio. Prices from £183 on Kayak but do book soon.

For hostels, try hostelbookers and hostelworld.

Eat where the locals eat. I found SA cheap. I had an excellent chicken and chips in Cusco for a few quid.

Your biggest expense is travelling so buses when possible and keep it to a minimum. Most things to see will be in Peru.

Do make sure you explore Lima. Some good museums, etc. Taxis are often cars with a bit of cardboard in the window with TAXI written on them. I found them cheap and OK.

Some good days trips available from Cusco, bookable from local travel agents.

Advice. Avoid Sao Paulo. It is potentially a dangerous place. Rio has a dozen nice beaches and a statue, and not a lot else.
