For 3 months I'd probably go with renting. If you buy you'll need to worry about registration which requires an Australian postal address, you'll also need to think about insurance and selling it when you've finished travelling, how long it takes to sell will depend on price and demand in Cairns. Because you're travelling between states the state in which your van is registered will be different to the state you end up in which might make it more difficult to sell.
