This summer, I might be visiting Indonesia, solo and independently (no tour package). I'll fly into Jakarta, and explore Java. After that, I'm not sure. I was thinking of continuing eastward, through Bali, Lombok, etc. Or maybe going by ferry to Sulawesi or Kalimantan (Borneo).
I'm just going to add questions, more specific like:
1. How would it cost to get to Java from Bali? I'm assuming that ferry will be available from hostels?
2. How much is it to travel by bus from Yogyakarta to Jakarta?
Well in Landlocked Southeast Asia, Thailand and Indo China, we can buy tickets from hostels and it ain't a rip off, would it be the same in Indonesia or must we go where the locals go?
I'm trying to find information online about land/sea travel to East Timor, but nothing helpful. I may have to buy a guide book, which is hell expensive for me.
Apparently, if you fly to East Timor (Dili) you can get a visa on arrival, at the airport. The same at Dili's seaport. BUT if you come in overland, from West Timor, you have to prearrange a visa. There is no visa on arrival at the land border.
I believe there are ferries that go to East Timor from Indonesia, as well as regular flights from Jakarta.
I just wanted to get a stamp from East Timor... I want to say, I've been to the 10 Asean states. Now with Timor, we it will be soon 11. I regret not making it to Brunei from Labuan island. Anyway, I've read the thread, Java to Bali, it's intimidating 14 days for some travelers.
I don't think I'll go to E. Timor.... not in Indonesia yet, but 100% going.
Has anyone been to Tana Toraja, in southern Sulawesi? Is it worth going there? I've heard the cultural is quite fascinating, and they have huge funeral rites that tourists are welcome to join. Also, the scenery is beautiful.
I understand it's a long bus ride from Makassar to get there. That worries me: I'm not too fond of long distance buses...
...I've only been to 2 of the ASEAN states, so far (Malaysia and Singapore). Indonesia will make it 3.

Missing Sumatra? Pity.
It's easy to travel around Indonesia by bus, though often not comfortable to do so.
