I'm planning to take a sailboat to Florida. As I understand any Brit or other European need a VIsa if entering US waters by yacht as opposed to by air which is much easier with the ESTA system. I'm looking for the most practical option none of which are at all easy it seems. 1 ) apply and visit US embassy Barbados by air at cost of $500, 2) sail to Dominican Republic and visit embassy, quite far out of the way too and my Spanish is not great 3) Stop in the in the bahamas and hope to get an appointment at the embassy there. Website says it can take weeks or months..! Any ideas?
So why not take the sailboat only as far as the Bahamas (either Freeport or Nassau), then get a round-trip flight from there to the US?
I noticed that round-trip flights from Freeport, Bahamas to Fort Launderdale, Florida, USA run less than $200 on United Airlines. Since you would then be arriving by air, all you would need is your machine-readable passport from the UK and you would be all set.
P.S. Be sure you get a round-trip air ticket. They will probably not let you in if you only book a one-way ticket.
