i am wanting to travel up the east coast for 5months in jan and want to know if anyone out there can share their experiences GOOD OR BAD with me so i mke the most of my time and dnt waste money and time in places not worth visiting!!!
The best place to start travels down the East Coast is Cairns. A small city, Cairns has plenty of accommodation and is the perfect place for you..Cairns is known as a pure backpacker destination and it lives up to that reputation very well. Plenty of pubs offering cheap dinners and booze. In saying that it's a really nice place just to kick back for a few days, laze by the lagoon and either do nothing or take advantage of the variety of organized trips to Kurunda/Cape Tribulation/Great Barrier Reef.
Of course, in January Cairns is a pretty bad place to start out from, what with it being the middle of the wet season up north, and the humidity being absolutely horrible. Much better to start down south, maybe Melbourne, maybe even doing Tasmania first.
kagzay: As for what's worth visiting: that depends a whole lot on what you like to do. Do you prefer to go hiking through national parks, or dancing the night away in the most happening nightclubs? Do you want to go skydiving, or visit aboriginal murals? Obviously you can do a bit of everything, but most people tend to have a preference for things that lie close to one or more of those examples. And five months is a long enough time that you can really see things in depth.
So you wouldn't suggest starting in Cairns in Jan and working south, but the other way around? (as Cairns was where I had seriously considered starting at, and then at the end of the year, being further south so I could get a cheaper flight to NZ...)
Well as Sander said, it depends on the time of year. In January Cairns will be warm and humid, in may-august it will be much more pleasant. In January starting in Melbourne would be better, it will be hot but not humid and you can take advantage of the beaches in the area, you might be able to arrange your trip so you pass through Sydney while it's still summer and arrive in Cairns around March which will take the edge off the humidity.
Having said that, you'll enjoy your trip no matter where you start.
My favourites on the east coast are:
- Wilsons Promontory for hiking and scenery
- Mount Kosciuszko NP for hiking and scenery
- Jervis Bay for relaxing on the beach
- Blue Mountains for hiking, swimming and scenery
- Byron Bay for nightlife, surfing and beach
- Fraser Island for lakes, scenery and relaxing
- Eungella National Park for hiking, scenery, waterfalls, platypus
- Airlie Beach for access to Whitsunday Islands, sailing, relaxing, snorkelling, Whitehaven Beach
- Mission Beach, for the beach
- Cairns for access to the Great Barrier reef, snorkelling, diving, access to Atherton Table Lands, Cape Tribulation
5 months seems like a long time to do just the east coast, you could quite easily fit more in unless you'll be stopping in one place for an extended period of time to work or something.
