Hey guys below is a draft of an itinerary for my trip with my girlfriend to Europe in March. We will already be in Spain visiting my brother and plan to spend 2 weeks checking out some places. I've seen most of Western Europe on another trip, but liked Germany a lot so thought we could go there and check some more places out. We plan on utilizing cheap airfair deals.
When people do tours like this, they always try to fit too much in and not allow for a lot of time spent travelling between places. Airlines will be a big help (it's over 1200 miles from Madrid to Budapest) in getting you about quickly but it takes time to get to an airport; get there an hour or two early, travel into town from the airport. A 3 hour flight suddenly becomes a 7 hour journey. Trains do take a long time.
You could book all journeys beforehand on the internet which saves messing about queuing for tickets. Some airlines like Ryanair are online only.
It depends on what you like. 2 full days in Budapest is OK for most. Not really that much in Prague. 2 days. Cologne, a day is enough for many and less in Dusseldorf.
Weather can be poor in March, with strong cold winds and rain which trends to put people off sightseeing a bit.
Bin Dusseldorf altogether. It's an OK place, but not really somewhere to concentrate on, while doing such a short trip unless you have a specific special reason to visit it.
I would suggest Praha to Berlin.
Do 2 nights in Budapest, not 3.
Try and fit in a trip to Vienna while in either B'pest and Praha. They're both within a short distance.
I wouldn't have any criticisms of your trip. My words are just advice through experience of being to every place you mention.. Except Freiberg. What interests you about it? Apart from it's close to Dresden which is a remarkably interesting city.
