There are buses and generally from Hersonisos you can easily travel by bus to Heraklion (IN the city is the Archaeological Museum, the fascinating Natural History museum and History museum....youc an, just, wallk to all of them.

From Heraklion bus station take the bus every 20 minutes and it takes about 20 minutes to Knossos, the most famous of the archaeological sites.

But there's lots more to see....and the most concise and easy to use information on things to see, buses and more is on the guide -snip-

Hope this helps

Happy travels

This may or not be helpfull because my geography is awfull but if you want to see the 'holidayish' destinations of Crete try Agios Nickolas(sp?) and Elounda. Just off Elounda is Spinalonga Island, a small island that was once the home to people banished for being lepers. I can't remember how close these places are in relation to Heraklion though so sorry if I've been no help.

As far as travelling goes I would avoid driving if you can, in general the roads around Greece aren't great...lots of scary bends and cliff edges.

I loved Heraklion! It's a beautiful little port town- take the time to spend an afternoon or evening there- around the Fountain of the Four Lions there are many little cafes, souvlaki shops and restaurants. It's a nice place to chill out for a few hours.

Down on the waterfront, there's a long breakwater that extends out past an old Venetian fort, where many Cretans go jogging- it has great views of the sea, and Crete. In the early evening it's really beautiful.

The people on Crete, that I met, were all very friendly and helpful. I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!
