Hi,
Sri Lanka is quite easy to get around with a couple of railway lines i.e. down the west coast Colombo to Galle to Matara or from Kandy to Galle and the local buses going all over the island (not sure about the Tamel areas of the north and east)
There are quite a few things you could see in 6/7 days, i would recommend the following:
Colombo - Financial and commercial capital of Sri Lanka with a few museums, shops and markets
Anuradhapura - ruins from ancient capitals
Kandy - Spiritual capital of the country, home of the tooth of Buddha (last town to fall to the British). With a amazing train journey from Colombo to Kandy rising up through the mountains and forest about 3 hours long and costing between 1 to 2 pounds if i remember correctly
Galle - Fort town on the south coast which has a very European feel to the old town.
And also any of the beaches on the island and look out for the ridiculously large Buddha's all over the island and the great way the temples seem to have merged both Buddist and Hindi relics.
