Backpacking Europe Advice Please!

Hello fellow backpackers/travelers,

Hi misslyss, firstly welcome to Travellerspoint I've had to remove some of your other copies of this post - we have a strict policy against duplicate postings, since it causes problems with people not knowing where to answer or answering twice, etc.

I think your plan is pretty good for the amount of time. The longest train ride would be from France to Italy. To get to Dublin, I think plane is the most convenient, but I'm not really sure what other options there are for that route. From London to Paris, train service is great and will get you there faster than the plane. From Paris to Amsterdam the train is also the best option in my opinion.

I would probably fly from Amsterdam down to Rome though and then fly back to London from Italy as well. You'll have to compare flight prices, but it is quite probably cheaper than the train too.

If you are on a budget you might also consider buses for some of your legs. Generally takes longer, but is cheaper.

Ya sorry, I posted it more then once to put it in different country category, then realized I couldn't delete the others after!

Thanks for the advice, I'm realizing more and more that you cant really plan everything ahead of time.

I have run into issues with the train not connecting to all the countries

Where have you been looking? RailEurope? That site sucks. Try instead, it will give you far more accurate timeschedules.

I do agree with Peter though that for some of the longer legs flying might be more economical than taking the train.

From Paris to Venice is an overnight train ride. Leaves around 4-6pm and get to Venice around 9am. It's not a bad ride at all. I got this ticket with my rail pass, and maybe paid a little bit more for a sleeper. But now, I hate that pass, and just buy my train ticket when I want to take the train.

I would fly from Dublin to London that seems easy. I enjoy the trains because you actually see where your going, and you don't have to go through security and deal with airport crazies.

Why not look into a multi-city ticket (usually the same price) from Dublin to England. If you want to, there a nice overnight cruise (or day) from London (Harwich actually) that you can take to A'dam and then train all the way to Italy and catch a flight home, so, your not overpaying or backtracking.
