I tend to advise people living a backpacking life in Australia that they need a minimum of AUD $60-$75 per day (averaged). That allows for staying in small dorm rooms in the better quality hostels, buying supermarket food for cooking your own meals, travelling on to a next destination once a week (by bus or train), and doing an occasional activity. (If you're not careful about living frugally and do a lot of activities or partying, you can easily spend 2-3 times as much. Some people living very frugally manage to get to $50/day or even lower, but this is rare.) For two people, you can save some costs by sharing, but not a whole lot. Buying a car (and selling it on at the end of your trip) might be much more worth it than when alone, although it'll mean you need to plan your itinerary much more, and can't just fly to the other end of the country on a whim.

So, based on the above average daily budget, expect to need AUD $20,000-$25,000 for a six month trip for the both of you (working out to ~€14.500-€18.200, USD $19.900-$24.900, or £12.500-£15.700).

If you're working, you can also save a lot of money by staying in a shared house, rather than in hostels. I have no idea how easy it'd be to find work in your particular fields of expertise, but having qualifications and work experience is always a plus, and generally people tend to do okay with finding work in Australia. Worst case, you could slow down the pace of travelling to stay in each place for ~3 weeks, and look for cleaning jobs at your hostel in exchange for accommodation; generally, when they know you'll stay on for a minimum of 3 weeks, they'll be glad to have you, and it's a great way to stretch your money, working just 2-3 hours per day, and having the rest of the day to yourself.

Sounds about right to me. But for just a few dollars more think $70-85 AUD (less in some places) per day you can usually get a small private room rather than the dorm in those better quality places.
