I'm staying in Sydney too, I have booked the Wake Up hostel. It's pretty big so loads of people to meet, although some people think the smaller the hostel the better. Just depends what kind of person you are and if you are willing to walk up to randoms and start chatting or not I'm really nervous about been alone too!

has a pretty popular bar downstairs, so it shouldn't be too hard to get to know others there Usually the folks I end up meeting at first are from my room, so given that it shouldn't really matter what size the overall hostel is. Given your age, I probably would put Wake Up slightly ahead of the YHA, although families do tend to book the private rooms. They're both great hostels though, and there is a popular backpacker bar under the YHA at Central station as well I haven't stayed at the one at the Rocks, but I hear it's nice.
I'd probably pick Wake Up if I was in your shoes and 25 again (I wish ).
By the way, if you book via Travellerspoint, you can tick a checkbox upon checkout that lets others who are booked in for the same dates via TP get in touch with you here. Might be a nice way to get to know others staying at the same place on the same dates before you actually leave home. You don't have to tick the box obviously, but just thought I'd mention it
Just stear clear of the Koala hostels if / when you travel up the East coast. Terrible service & rats in almost every room I stayed in up the coast ... companies like Wicked Travel (great company - recommended) will try and get you to stay there because obviously they make commission & when you're on a trip with them, they've sort of got you anyway.

I've heard the wake up is the best one for partying too! I'm 31, well 32 when I arrive so I hope I'm not TOO old!! ha ha
I'm going to book the Wake Up for xmas and then book the Rocks for NYE as it's got an amazing location and i hope i'll have met loads of people to hook up with anyway!
Let me know when you arrive and we can at least grab a beer with people we've chatted to?

I've had a quote back from Wake Up which is $268 (AUS) for 7 nights from 23rd to 29th, then i'll book the Rocks from 30th til about 2nd/3rd.
Then heading down to Melbourne for a week or so before flying to Bali.
