Does anyone have any advise on how I can keep photos safe on my gap year? I wasn't going to take a lap top as it's too big, would a net book be any better? Keeping them on my camera might not be very safe...
Photo memory cards will be full in no time and any single location to store your photos is too much risk, so you want to spread them around. My recommendation is always to bring a netbook / small laptop (there's lots of full-featured 12" laptops) which can burn DVDs. Every time you've made another 4GB worth of photos, burn two DVDs with them, sending one home by regular post, and keeping the other with you. Have folk at home check that the DVD which they receive can actually be read at their computer, and make certain not to delete those photos from the laptop (and if you have enough memory cards, not even from the camera) until you've had that confirmation.
What I did was: you can always find some photo shop that will burn your photos onto a dvd. It is usually not expensive.
I would keep one copy of the dvd with me and mail the other one back home.
If you carry an external hard drive - that can help as well.

Almost all netbooks leave that out, yeah, but there's some which do have it. Searching swiftly, I see the Packard Bell Easynote Butterfly XS-EV-327 as an 11.6" netbook, or the Dell Vostro 1220 or Acer Travelmate 6293 as 12" laptops which burn DVDs and are in the €450-€650 pricerange. Alternatively you could get an external USB DVD writer to go with just any old regular netbook.

You can also subscribe to an online site that transfers large files..like
Dropbox.com. there are MANY free ones.
Go to an internet cafe and log into the site, uploads your photos to the site. They will zip the info and send the email, to any address that you want.
When you return home, the file will be there. The photos will unzip into jpg. format into your computer.
Other sites to try are Kodax, Snapfish, Picasa ( part of Google)..etc.. They are slightly different than Dropbox or the other large transfer sharing websites but check them out, to see if you like them.
They serve a valuable purpose. You can then send an email to your friends and have them see your photos, as you travel. Many people that travel for extended lengths, use these sites to share photos with family members.
These ideas can save you money from buying or lugging a netbook. Although I will travel with one, The MacBook Air.
Thanks! I did have a look at some sharing sites was wan't sure how easy it is to download the photos when I get home? Plus, if I go to a internet cafe do I not need to put my photos on the computer to be able to upload them?

It is the same as using your own computer.. Just always remember if you ever use an internet cafe.. DELETE all the history from the computer, delete your photos and EMPTY the trash can, when you finish.. I prefer not to use internet cafes but bring my own computer, depending on where I am traveling, although I still use them occasionally.
I is beyond easy to download your photos from all of the photo sharing sites.. just select the album or individual pic and click download.
