I went to California and Vegas in 2009. San Fran has the Alcatraz prison which is definitely worth the visit but you will have to book this well in advance as it is so popular. Also watch the film with Clint Eastwood in it before you go... will make more sense. Pier 39 is a weird experience, where you will see loads of sea lions and I would highly recommend this! They are both close together and near the famous bridge too. There was a shopping area called Urban Square - check this place out!
In San Diego stayed at a relaxing place called Mission Bay, which is near SeaWorld. Seaworld was awesome, get up close to dolphins, whales, stingrays etc and some rides there too. The Zoo is one of the biggest there is, well worth the visit! Mission Bay is full of 18-30 yr olds and the social scene is really cool!
Book a helicopter tour to Grand Canyon when you are in Vegas. This is a mind-blowing experience, and some companies will stop by the river for champagne lunch! There are always concerts and shows going on in Vegas, we saw The Killers at the Mandalay, and there was a world title boxing match at the MGM.
In LA, I would highly recommend going to six flags magic mountain theme park, best rides in the world there! Also you got Universal Studios. Definitely go to an LA Dodgers Baseball match, even if you dont like sport, they have a fair that runs on during the day before the game and theres plenty of entertainment. Some of the things that goes on will leave your head scratching though, like Blood Donor of the Game ehhh??!! The stadium is near hollywood too, which unfortunately is a bit of a dive, me and my mate only stayed for an hour, but something to tick off your list anyway.
