It's a matter of looking at internet budget flight sites and maybe phoning around (The Daily Mail for Saturday or Sunday have a good travel section with lots of phone numbers).
You need to book ASAP as cheap flights are going already.
For best prices, book around mid-week. Be flexible. Accept a flight which is not direct (spending a few hours in an airport somewhere on the way there and back can save quite a bit of money). One year I went Air France where they used a cheap flight to France to catch it which avoided heavy UK taxes for travelling long haul.
Consider stopping off somewhere on the way for a break (it's a LONG flight to Australia) and maybe a bit of sightseeing. Maybe Bangkok on the way back. It's a fantastic shopping centre but you don't want to carry everything to Australia and bring it back again.
