As a Brit also living overseas, I spent 7 months trying to open an account with a bank I walked into on a trip to UK. However, the bank I chose, NatWest (National Westminster) were extremely helpful and between us we managed to jump through all the hoops. Fees, I think are pretty standard in the UK and its easy to have a no frills account with a debit card. I did have to provide a lot of information though, so be prepared! Hope this helps!

I'm with HSBC and have always found them to be good; my partner is a New Zealander and he had no problems opening an account with HSBC when he was in the UK.
You may need a national insurance number to apply for an account with any of the banks; if you do, has all the info required to do so.
