Driving from Johannesburg to Cape Town

Hi All

There is a major route from Johannesburg that gets you to Upington in the Northern Cape (N14). The route to Upington will probably not be the most interesting. The country is pretty dry up there and the scenery somewhat repetitive, but if you're willing to do the driving to take a more scenic detour, a fairly cool trip is possible.

If you have 4 days, i'd suggest the national road to Uptington and then a slower drive across the very north of the country and a drive south from the north-west of the country to Cape Town on the N7.

You have the option of stopping at a weird, but quaint town on the N14 called Keimos. Not sure about accommodation, but i'm sure you'll find something there. They do have a campsite on the Orange River. Next stop, I'd recommend Augrabies Falls. They have relatively affordable chalets and a campsite. Very cool spot. Check out www.sanparks.org for details. I'd probably take the N14 all the way to Springbok (will be a dry, potentially boring drive), and then south from there. Springbok will have accommodation. Good places to stop on the way down are anywhere around Clanwilliam and Citrusdal on the N7 much closer to Cape Town. They are part of the Cederberg Mountain Range and if you search you can find plenty off the beaten track spots in the mountains with great waterfalls, rivers and rock pools. check out www.cederberg.co.za (There are lots of places here, but it is off the N7). However the drive to Cape Town from here can take you through a few cool spots like Ceres, Worcester and then into Cape Town on the N1 national highway. Or you can just get back onto the N7 and head down south.

Over 7 days you could do quite a lot and potentially find some cool spots in the Karoo (semi desert in the middle of our country), but just understand that because the country is so dry up north, there will be long stretches of driving that could be quite boring....

The towns tend to be small and a bit odd, but you'll definitely get a taste for one version of small-town South Africa!
