Ive been wanting to travel around Oz/NZ/SE Asia for a while now but kept debating as to which ittinerary would suit me best. I finally made my mind up a few weeks ago and Ill be leaving Montreal mid January to go tour NZ for approx 2 weeks (North and South) before leaving for Melbourne and touring Oz for a couple of months. I will be going alone to NZ tho and Im quite nervous.. I dont want to have to fly back there once I land in Oz and, to be honest, Ive never rly travelled alone.. so Im not too sure if I shld just do it on my own or join an organized tour ? The tours ive found up to now are pretty expensive. I just want to have a good time and enjoy the country as much as possible, whether its by driving, hiking or biking ! Any suggestions, advice or ideas ?
It's easy to do it on your own and you find you solve problems as they arise. I've been doing it for decades.
The easiest way to see NZ is by car, going where you want, when you want rather than stuck waiting for buses and going strictly from A to B. Lots of B&B about in January and it's cheaper to stay at one outside of town than a hotel in town. I would spend more than 2 weeks there.
A good road map helps. Do be careful of radar traps in the Auckland area.
Two points. 1. Going from one island to the other is easy. You drop your car off at one side and pick another from the same agency up on the other side, going on the ferry as a foot passenger. No problem.
2. If you don't drop your car off where you picked it up, there is an expensive one way charge (as in someone has to be paid to drive it back).
Despite it's huge size there is not that much to see in Australia. Most of it is on the east coast, with Ayers Rock in the middle if you want to see it and Perth on the west coast. I found it easiest to fly from east to west.
Hi there, am also travelling solo for the first time and am excited and nervous, due in Australia mid Jan then to New Zealand for a few days. Anyone got travel tips or advise re being safe while away?
