Boy you are really going in for a crash course in travel survival! Don't worry though, you will be fine. India is tiring but on the whole pretty safe. Do dress modestly for India, as a single woman you will certainly get a lot of attention, but being properly dressed is key.
Ok depending on your budget, you may want to consider getting a tuk tuk/ auto rickshaw from the airport. It will be cheaper than a taxi. I think it will run around 400-600 rupees. you are going to have to negotiate for everything, and especially rickshaws. The first thing they will do when they see a westerner is turn off the meter and tell you it doesnt work. You can refuse to go unless they use the meter, and keep trying until you find someone willing to use the meter, but coming from the airport they are all on the scam and its very difficult. So probably best if you just negotiate flat rate, so you know from the start how much it will be. Other option Ive used is start walking out of the airport. There are more rickshaws out on the road and they are more likely to give you an honest deal. Either way the worst its going to be is $10 or so so not too much damage.
Ok next where to go. Most westerners head to Paharganj, its close to New Delhi train station, so a good place for when you head out to Rajasthan. I'd probably just go and then look at the places and negotiate a room. there are plenty of places there to choose from. I haven't been since the commonwealth games and I'm told since then they cleaned Paharganj up and raised a lot of the prices. But I think it's still the most popular backpacker area and as such you will meet other travelers there and be able to join them for your trip to Rajasthan.
Hi Dodger, Thanks a lot for your reply. Sounds interesting crash course in travel survival auch auch. Last night I almost could not sleep aggg no worries just excitment and bit nervous. I was wondering that maybe it's an idea to skip Delhi, after arrival at New Delhi airport book a flight to Trivandrum, Kerala and just skip my north part of the trip. What do you think? Kerala, Goa and ending with Mumbai?

Just wanted to wish you luck with your travels, would be interested to hear how you get on...
I've just got my visa back & am ready to book, my plan is to fly to Mumbai from the UK on 29th April and then for the next 2 weeks I'll be going to Pune, Goa (Anjuna) & Kerala (Cochin) (I'll be in Goa for my Birthday ) before heading back to Mumbai for the flight home.
I did originally plan on going to Delhi & Agra etc but I settled on the beaches & beautiful south in the end. I'll be going solo as well, first time I've ever gone abroad by myself, so am both nervous & excited like you.
If our trips overlap let me know, could meet up while out there... I'm hoping to meet like minded travelers when I'm out there
It's really a shame to miss Rajasthan, but considering it's your first time in India, and you are alone, it maybe a good idea to do as you say and head south. Since you only have 4 weeks, spending it all in the south will make it much less stressful. You can easily spend 4 weeks traveling around Goa, and Kerala with a trip out to Hampi too, then off to Mumbai.
Just on your early arrival in Delhi, which I have also done, there used to be a bus run by ex-servicemen that you take from Delhi airport into the city. It was a flat rate and avoided rickshaw hassles. Hopefully they still have it.

Dear travelers,
I am traveling alone to India on the 24th of March... I am very excited, but also a bit scared. I suppose to go with a friend of mine but she cancelled because of personal reasons. So now I am on my own, which makes it really exciting! However after the stories I heard I became a bit afraid as India is not the easiest country to do my first "alone travels"....
I am landing in New Delhi at 5:00 am and I was thinking of booking a Hotel for the 1st 2 nights. Check the city and move of to Rajasthan area. Then I want to fly to Kerala and from there travel by trein to Goa and eventually Mumbai. I have 4 weeks to do all this... No plan or bookings done yet.
- Do you have suggestions, recommendations?
- Where is best to spend my first 2 nights in Delhi?
- How can I travel best from Delhi to Jodhpur? How long does it take by trein?
- Which places are worth to visit and Rajasthan? And can I book a hotel after arrival and not in advance?

Hi Steffi...
I am in Delhi on the day you arrive here... and can be helpful in suggesting you on What to do in Delhi or nearby areas... I would suggest you to spend a couple of nights in Delhi and then can Visit The Taj Mahal for a day... and do Jaipur for a couple of days... thereon.. You may fly down to Kerala and spend sometime there before moving to GOA... and then to Mumbai...
