Ok, so not that anyone asked.. but a small idea we had yesterday was implemented today.
Well, that was pretty sweet. It took all of 2 minutes to get a response back. The text and pics showed up in the body of the email (though some pic links were "broken"). I downloaded the .pdf that came with it and it was beautiful.
Great idea - now, how to promote it so that the entire population of computer users in the world sends emails?? Hmmm, I'll work on that this weekend. "What are we going to do this weekend Brain? Same thing we do every weekend Pinky - try to take over the world...."
Good show guys!!!
Looks good. I tried it on two separate email accounts.
In my first mailbox, I sent to guide@, waited for an hour and nothing came back. I then sent a request to guide@ from a webmail account. While complaining to Sam about the long delay, I realised that it's actually guides@. So I sent another one to that instead from both mailboxes. They arrived in both mailboxes promptly, within a couple of minutes. Two minutes later, I got another guide in my webmail account. An hour later, another one arrived in my first mailbox.
I guess both guide@ and guides@ work. One problem though. In the webmail, the style of h3 (actually styled by just bold in wiki) is affected by the webmail's css style, causing it to turn orange. Also, the external link icon does not show up.
I've sent two e-mails using United States. I don't get pretty pictures. This is what I received:
United States
Travel Guide <http://www.travellerspoint.com/guide/> > United States
This page redirects to USA </guide/USA/>
Contributors: Sam I Am

I did get them within couple of minutes though - if that counts. Again, I use Entourage and Safari. (And, have updated both this past week.)
The first link just brings me to the guide's main page - not to the US main page. The second does give me the redirect text entry page to add content.
Pretty sweet system. I sent off for one and got it back within seconds
Excellant !!! I tried it with Egypt and got the PDF copy within a minute !
Brilliant - did it for the Philippines and it came back within about 30 seconds.
This is good, but how much of an allowance is there for different names for particular countries? For example:
- USA could be requested as USA, United States, America, United States of America
- UK could be requested as UK, United Kingom, United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland, or even Britain or Great Britain (though those last 2 aren't technically the same as UK as they don't include N Ireland)
On this I just tried Holland, which rightly redirects to Netherlands on the website. However the email that comes back says "This page redirects to Netherlands" - the word Netherlands is a link, but it's incorrect (http://guide/Netherlands/).

This is a good point. I think we can handle it through the redirect system without too much trouble. Detecting whether an article is a redirect article is fairly trivial and we can then just load up the guide from the page it is redirecting to.
The more tricky point is actually disambiguation pages. So for instance, if you send in a request for , you're not going to get a great result. That, I'm not entirely sure how to resolve. My main idea is to make the links in the resulting email actually link to write another email with the correct subject (does that make sense?).

I *knew* someone would do that The guide@ email address is just an alias. I guess for some reason that doesn't get forwarded on immediately, since the guides@ email is checked every 150 seconds at the moment.

This is kind of a hotmail specific thing. We did test the design in a few clients; gmail, yahoo, hotmail and Apple Mail. Yahoo and Apple Mail are most true to the original. Gmail just does its own thing (which is still acceptable) and hotmail kind of messes up those headings. Might do a bit of fine tuning to see if we can fix that.

Your problem is basically the same as mojorob's. The redirect articles aren't handled. If you use USA as your subject it will work fine. But of course, we can do that better and will work to improve it.
