In many European countries wild camping is tolerated as long as you are discreet and are gone the next morning.
Most cyclists end up using a mix of camping wild, camping on official sites and staying at bed&breakfasts and hostels.
If you take a tent and camping gear with you and pitch it whereever you find a patch of grass plus have a few stays at camping sites and hostels thrown in you can plan on needing around 20-30 EUR a day. So for 5-6 months you are looking at a figure that is somewhere between 3000 to 5400 EUR.
Tip: As for a possible route look at the Eurovelo route 6.
And since you are from England consider going London-Amsterdam-Berlin-Dresden-Prague-Brno-Vienna or vice versa instead of passing Calais twice. The ferry from Harwich to Hoek van Holland takes bicycles.
