Hi.
City Center can be very empty at carnival and a bit dangerous. Praia do Flamengo is a better location, though this one is almost at City Center. But still a better option in my opinion. The closer you get to Ipanema, the better. Acctualy, if you could find an hotel in Ipanema or Leblon you would enjoy more the best of the city. The metro is limited in Rio, so being close to a station should not be your main concern.

thanks for your advice - I am getting alittle bit confused about the carnival stuff!
So.. the main parade is at the sambodromo in the city centre, but street parties etc are out at copa and ipanema? is that correct?
Cos, I was thinking being near the metro would be good, as then we could get to the sambodromo easily - but that's not really necessary?
