I've just gone and bought a one way ticket to Friedrichshafen in the middle of July. I didn't know where it was before I paid for the flight, and was pretty pleased to find out it was so close to Switzerland (I'm just after a bit of a random adventure).

What exactly are you doing in Friedrichshafen, I'm curious to know? For six months, I lived very near there in the small town of Fischbach, and you are right, it is very near Switzerland. However, during that time, I was a student at Bodenseehof Bible School. It is an English-speaking boarding school, so I didn't pay for my accomodations, in the traditional sense of the word.
My school will be closed and possibly renovating during July, so I couldn't even recommend that you stay there for a "trial week." However, there is a campground right next to my school, in Fischbach. Simply get on the bus # 7395 going towards Meersburg at the Friedrichshafen hauptbahnhof or Stadtbahnhof bus station and tell the bus driver that you are going to Fischbach West (). He will tell you how much your ticket will cost, and don't worry, they give change. Then get off in Fischbach. Though I don't remember exactly what the street names are anymore, I think you get off around Ziegelstrasse (street my school is on) and walk a block to the right (keep going in the direction in which you are already going). If you get to an apple orchard, you have gone too far. The campground is in between the orchard and the school. You can always try asking at Bodenseehof Bible School if you get lost. Since I have never camped there, I'm not sure how much it costs, but it'll very likely be less expensive than the hotel up the street.
While staying there, it is just a ten minute bus ride (and buses are frequent) or a taxi ride (if you feel like shelling out some dough) into Friedrichshafen.
If you have any questions about things to see and do in the area, then feel free to ask. There are a number of lovely restaurants in Friedrchshafen, as well as the Eis Cafe right on the lake, and so on. The Bodensee is beautiful, and so is the surrounding countryside, full of lush forests and peaceful farms. You can climb up to the top of a tower overlooking the lake and see the whole city and across to Switzerland (in the other direction). Hiking, windsurfing, climbing, biking, canoeing, kayaking, and so on are all nearby. The people of Friedrichshafen are very proud of their zeppelin that flies around the lake. You can visit the zeppelin museum to figure out what that's all about.

Thanks for that reply! I'm not sure exactly what I'm going to be doing at all! If you could recommend a few things to see...some good cafes etc that would be excellent.
I'm not really planning on doing much sight-seeing. It's just going a be a few days of relaxing, reading, and absorbing myself in some local culture, to relax after finishing my degree.
Do you know how much it costs and how easy it is to get into Switzerland (mainly Zermatt)?
