Student Visa questions

After reading through several long threads and the sticky at the top, I still have some questions regarding my visa situation. I am currently studying abroad in the Czech Republic for 9 months. I have a visa that will last me until the end of May when I have my return flight home but I am considering dropping out of my Study Abroad program and taking online courses through my home university to save some money. I am wondering what happens to my student visa when I drop out of the study abroad program. Does it become invalid? If it does become invalid do I still have 90 days on a tourist visa to remain in the country? If I were to leave the Czech Republic for 6 weeks and come back would I then have 90 days on a fresh tourist visa? I have already registered with the Czech police, have a visa stamped in my passport, and have it signed off that I was legal as of the 15th of September. I just don't know what happens if I leave the program and I have been having a hard time getting a straight answer from the Embassy in Prague.

Next time, please bullet-list or number your questions. Easier that way.

Re dropping out: I don't know the conditions of your visa (student visa are issued under national rules, so they differ between Schengen countries), but in general that would render the visa invalid. In the conditions, a period should be mentioned in which you are to leave the Czech Republic. If you leave after that, that would count as overstaying.

Re tourist visa: if you haven't entered any of the Schengen countries on a tourist visa during the last 180 days, and if you are from a country that is exempt from having to apply for a visa, you can stay in the Schengen area for 90 days when your tourist visa expires. In that case, I think that strictly speaking you are to report to the foreign police, to be officially admitted as a tourist. If you are from a country that is not exempt, you'd have to apply for a tourist visa from your home ocuntry. In that case, the above does not apply.

Re six weeks: don't know where you got that, but: no.

Re embassy: if you don't get a straight answer, that usually because you're not asking a straight question. Have you given them all the information about your situation?

good luck, Niels
