I'm looking at getting a GoLite Jam2 backpack. It's very light at about 700grams and opens up to around 45/50 litres - which is exactly what I need for stashing food, water and cooking fuel when I get off a plane. But the really clever thing about it is, it buckles down to about 20 litres - more than enough for my basics. But what are the actual LxWxD dimensions of the bag itself? I need to know for carry-on requirements. Nothing on Google. Thanks.
Obviously not for normal consumption (I have specific criteria) but I should have added a for interest.
Seen these for £40 here in the UK and I'm just a click away, but I do need to know it will fit Ryanair spec.
The Jam is a frameless pack so be aware of that when packing - you need to pack it so that your gear forms a rigid structure against your back - otherwise, it's going to feel like carrying a sack of potatoes.
It's also a roll-top closure so the height dimension depends on how tall you pack it. Rolled tight, from bottom to where the shoulder straps attach (minimum height), you're looking at about 21-22 inches. Width is within carry-on restrictions and depth, as long as it's not stuffed full, will be within most airline dimensions too.
Here's a trick to try when using a frameless pack when traveling. Use one of those pack-it folders from Eagle Creek or other and put that inside the pack against the back panel to form a rigid back panel. It works well.
I have used a frameless pack for traveling and it's minimal weight is appealing. But, that comes at the cost of flexible packing - you can't just throw your stuff in and go. You need to pack carefully if you're carrying it any distance. Also - 20 lbs max is about all the weight it can handle.
Eventhough I usually now only carry 10-12 lbs of gear, I still use a framed pack. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply. I should've posted back before now as I bought one after I eventually got the info from 'Golite'.
Dimensions are well within 'carry-on' in it's 'daybag' state. And as you suggested, the depth did need looking at if it wasn't going to belly out when checking in, so I slid an unrolled 3/4 sleeping pad inside as a 'tube' and put everything inside that and it sat perfectly. Won't be using the back and side pockets till I get off the plane and able to 'spread out'. BTW, the back pocket is huge. Also found that the back panel was comfy, but that's just me and I'll find out properly on a long walk. So far, it's exactly what I was looking for. A rare thing.
Not everyones idea of a travel bag, but if anyone's interested, I bought mine at a little over half price.
it's a paler green than the one in the picture, but doesn't look too much like a laundry bag.
