I highly recommend STA Travel for booking RTW trips as they sorted me and gf out earlier this year for our travels and they have just booked my flights for trip next March. Last year i paid £1595 for flights however this was for London - Johannesburg - Singapore - Sydney - fly out of Cairns to Auckland - Los Angeles - London.
I think the general rules are that the more stops the cheaper it works out in the long run as although it costs more you are seeing more of the world and taking more flights.
Next year I am going London - Sydney via Hong Kong - Sydney to Bangkok - fly out of Malaysia to India - London and paid just under £989.

I'd recommend Trailfinders - they have always got me the cheapest deal in the past both for RTW and return tickets. I have found that STA are only cheap if you are under 26.

That is quite expensive. I sot the same ticket £400 cheaper through the flight centre, however that also could be due to the time of year you go...
Just bought my RTW ticket today with Travel Nation. They've been excellent so far.
I'm flying Uk - Beijing, Hong Kong - Bangkok, Singapore - Melbourne, Sydney - Auckland, Auckland - San Fran, New York - Uk.
We're paying £998. STA, Flight Centre & Trailfinders were £100's higher. The cheapest was £1400.
But, I would advise getting a quote from all of them.
We went to Flight Centre and planned a RTW trip and got a quote from them. We then went home and searched the flights individually. Was a bit long winded but then took the total price we got back to Flight Centre to see if they could match it. They did and we saved about £500 each so well worth the effort.
