I’m in the early stages of planning my first trip to Europe (and beyond) in the second half of 2010; 4 – 6 months all up. It’ll be a combination of small group travel and travel on my own. I was wondering if anyone could suggest an interesting way to get from Dubrovnik to Rome over, say, seven days, and a quick way just in case I want to stay a little longer in Dubrovnik.
Bus to Split --> Ferry to Ancona --> Train to Rome??
There are plenty of options, depending on your budget and time to travel and what you want to see/do. Some that I can think of right now:
Fastest:
- flight Dubrovnik-Rome (about 1 hour, but limited service)
A couple of days:
- ferry Dubrovnik-Bari (6-8 hours, depending on operators thus different ferries), train Bari-Rome (4-6 hours, depending on train types/connections)
- bus Dubrovnik-Split, ferry Split-Ancona (9 hours), train Ancona-Rome
- bus Dubrovnik-Zadar, ferry Zadar-Ancona (6 hours), train Ancona-Rome
Long way round:
- bus Dubrovnik-Split, train Split-Trieste-Venice-Bologna-Florence-Rome
- bus Dubrovnik-Split, bus/train Split-Poreč/Pula/Rovinj/Rabac (quite a few connections will be required as they're off the main overland route), catamaran from which of the four cities-Venice, train Venice-Bologna-Florence-Rome
Dubrovnik - Zagreb - Ljubljana - Vienna - Milan - Rome. Trains and buses do the whole trip.
Plenty of hostels en-route and the scenery is just wonderful. I recommend (from 1st hand experience) that you spend more time in Zagreb and Ljubljana than Vienna.
