well, why apply for a position in a cruise ship. they have vessels that tours around the world. if you will get a job in that ship, it is free accommodation and meals. plus you will get some salary by doing so... cruise staffs also have breaks and opportunities in exploring the places that the vessels visit so I guess its pretty much a good way to travel the world. I don't think it will give enough time for volunteer activities though...
Hey guys me and girlfriend had the exact same problem, we wanted to help but didnt want to pay a whole lot of money to do so. we appreciate they can not be out of pocket for putting us up or food however we found agencies were charging ridiculous amounts, some £1500-£2000 for a fortnight and this did not include flights.
Obvioulsy i dont know which volunteer area you want to do, but me and gf are helping in an orphange in India next May/June. If you want to work/help with underprivileged children and young people you should search for a list of orphanes over the world found easily on google. from here we emailed the orphanages direct and asked too help. some have volunteer projects set up and have packs they send out. from the two we liked best, they had a smaller fee of £200-300 paid upon first few days of arrival which covers cost of accomodation and 3meals a day.
Hope this helps

Fully funded 10 week third world volunteering placements for British Passport holders. They sent me to India, and I can tell you first hand it's not too good to be true. Also check out the European Voluntary Service's database on google. Some sending organisations include PointEuropa and ICYE. The projects are mostly in Europe but there are a few Third World development projects. I'm going to Honduras for 6 months, fully funded and even modestly paid. If you look hard enough, people will pay for you.
