South America budget?

hey guys!

Hi, for starters Brazil is more expensive than Argentina and I don't know about Mexico.

However, for my trip in SA which was 2 years ago now (how time flies) I budgeted $60 US per day and I lived like a king in that I did what I wanted when I wanted pretty much. I visited Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Bolivia and Peru.

I think if you stick to bigger dorms when you stay in the more expensive area's then $50 per day is doable.

I would err on the side of closer to 2 months than 3 if I were you and enjoy every minute.

I have never couch surfed mind you so I guess that would have been a massive saving given accom was about 1/5th 1/4 ish of the budget probably.

Travel everywhere you possibly can by bus too. Certainly in Argentina the buses are very good in the main and I didn't find the Brazillian one's too bad either albeit not quite as good as Arg.

Looking at it now I think you might even manage to get close to your 3 months with the accom savings you will make. Good luck and enjoy.

thanks tricky!! makes things alot easier when im told i can actually do the trip with the money i have... i may end up just going for 2 months, as im planning on going to vietnam with a friend for 17 days in august and also south africa in december for another friends wedding - any extra money will be welcomed haha!

would you suggest taking travellers cheques (i never ever used them in europe.. does anyone ever use them anymore??) or just using my australian atm card and taking out cash when i need it?

Mexico is very inexpensive if you do it right. Sounds like you will be fine. If your travelling alone that should be plenty. I would just recomend have some emergency funds set away becuase you just never know what can happen and things always cost more than you think..
