As a big traveler of Europe I would be hard pressed to list my favorite places in Europe as I love so much of it. So instead, I think it would be easer to list the worst places in Europe.
From 1 - 5 in no special order....
Even though it's the world's cleanest capital city, Reykjavik. Just nothing to do after a day or two except what you've already done.
Bucharest. Probably Europe's hottest summer city (regularly 40c - 45c). Just filthy and so many buildings left to rot after they shot Ceausescu, including a less than 1/2 finished construction that was intended to be the world's largest public library.
London. So stupidly expensive for basic things like a short train ride and a drive through in your own car. Utterly putrid river and despite a congestion charge, always congested.
Skopje. Just awful.
Johannesburg. Without a doubt the unfriendliest city I have ever been to.
Nothing personal you all understand, just talking from my own experiences.
There's nowhere in particular I find really, really bad, but I do agree that Geneva is pretty boring. Also don't like some very industrialised little towns I've passed through. Lahti in Finland is incredibly ugly. Some towns in the UK, certainly...such as Aylesbury.

Would that be Jo'burg in Sweden? Or the one in Italy?

Yeah I know it's not in Europe, but I've never found anywhere more unfriendly.
If it had to be the most unfriendliest city or place in 'Europe', then for me the gold medal winner would be Gibraltar.
But it's still like an allnight party compared with Jo'burg.

River's a lot cleaner than it used to be.
While I'm sure there are worst places, trying to travel in Italy during one of their many many train strikes is no fun at all.
While I too was bored with Geneva, I must say I had an excellent meal there at a rather upscale hotel.
I'm really surprised no one has mentioned Russia?

My nomination for the worst place to be in in Europe: 12th District City Hospital in Kiev, Ukraine. I have really really bad memories of this place, especially of the sanitary conditions and the available supplies (or better the lack thereof).

Gotta say, I've done many places in Europe that have had a train strike going on and every experience was just a nightmare. It's quite incredible, from Italy to Albania and Spain to the UK, that it seems all the customer co-ordinators are trained by the same people. When you ask them a question about how you can continue your journey, they just grunt in a multitude of languages and point you to a bus stop or taxi rank.
I've been to Russia many times and find it, although rather disorganised, a tremendous place.
Moscow was massively expensive until I found my way around, then it became one of Europe's cheapest capitals. Previously it was amongst the most expensive. Amazingly friendly people compared to the west and Saturday night is party night across all the time zones. No complaints from me.
River's a lot
cleaner than it used to be.
Goodness knows what it used to be like then. True, upstream towards the west it's an OK section of river, but through the centre of London and onward to the sea (incidentally that stretch of sea where it flows into has been been branded one of the most polluted in Europe), it's just dark brown and totally filthy with bankside froth and so much rubbish floating down it.
